Sunwing is the first airline in Canada and the second in the world to commercially fly the second generation Aviation Partners Boeing Split Scimitar Blended Winglets. The Blended Winglets when applied to the existing “curved tipped” Blended Winglets, the Split Scimitar Winglet upgrade adds strengthened spars, aerodynamic ‘curved’ tips, and a large ventral fin, which improves performance and decreases fuel burn by approximately 7%.
This summer a pair of it’s environment friendly Boeing 737-800s are operating on behalf of TUI Travel group airline, Thomson Airways from Belfast International and Dublin Airport to sun destinations in Europe.
On Tuesday 20th C-FTJH Boeing 737-8BK/W c/n Sunwing Airlines SWG9092 arrived Dublin Airport 2124 local to commence it’s summer lease to Thomson Airways, entering service on Thursday 22nd to Palma de Mallorca Departing Dublin at 06.02 on May 22nd as TOM9DP returning to Dublin at 11.59 as TOM 2CQ.
Sunwing Airlines President Mark Williams said “We feel we have a responsibility as a market leader in Canada to continue investing in technology which reduces our environmental impact. Sunwing has the lowest CO2 emissions per seat mile of any major airline in Canada and this new initiative will lower our emissions even further”.
Sunwing Airlines plans to retrofit its fleet of 20 Boeing 737-800s by the May with the Split Scimitar Blended Winglets.
Aviation Partners Boeing is a Seattle based joint venture of Aviation Partners, Inc. and The Boeing Company. Nearly 5,000 Blended Winglet Systems are now in service with over 200 airlines in more than 100 countries. APB estimates that Blended Winglets have saved airlines worldwide more than 3.8 billion gallons of jet fuel to-date.
