Shannon Airport is gearing up to reach the 2 million passenger mark by the end of 2024, the first time since 2009. According to Mary Considine, CEO of The Shannon Airport Group, growth across all key air services in 2023 surpassed expectations.

The economic benefits from the Group’s activities extend far beyond passenger numbers. An independent report undertaken by Oxford Economics and published in 2023, quantifies the positive impact of The Shannon Airport Group to the Irish and Mid-West economy. It highlights its crucial role in balanced regional development and significant contribution to Ireland’s GDP, job creation, and tax revenues. The report shows that The Shannon Airport Group delivers a major contribution of almost €4 billion (€3.96bn) to Ireland’s GDP, supports over 20,300 jobs across the Irish workforce, and contributes €643m in tax revenues.”
In 2023 Shannon Airport handled 1.959 million passengers, a 29% increase on prior year, the highest level of traffic since 2009 driven by Aer Lingus and Ryanair base expansion and launch of a new seasonal daily Chicago service by United Airlines.
Shannon’s three market segments all reported strong growth as continental European traffic rose by 41% to 748,000, transatlantic passenger numbers grew by 24% to 296,000 and UK traffic increased by 31% to 838,000 passengers.
