Congratulations to Transaero Engineering Ireland Ltd engineering apprentice Joe Kelly who was selected to go forward for the 42nd World Skills Competition which will be held in Leipzig, Germany, July 2013, after winning in the 55th National Skills Competition Aviation Skills category,which was held at the Dublin Institute of Technology Aviation Technology Center, Dublin Airport.

The National Skills Competition tested every aspect of the skill and workmanship of the apprentices over an intense period of three days in the field of Aileron Rigging, Borescope Inspection, Daily Inspection, Electrical, Propeller Removal, Inspection and Installation, Sheet Metal Work.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony held last Friday in the Gresham Hotel O’Connell Street , the DIT Dean of Business Paul O’Sullivan stated the skills was the cornerstone for the recovery of the economy and Ireland needed to strive to build it’s skills base with the German economy a model to strive for with an strong industrial base, and the national skills participants would in future be entrepreneurs, innovators and managers.
Since 1950s the National Skills Competition has heralded the start of the new educational year for young apprentices – details on the background to the competition can be found at Skills Ireland.
The competition has twelve different trades: Aircraft Maintenance; Automobile Technology; Autobody Repair; Bricklaying; Cabinet Making; Car Painting; Cookery; Heavy Vehicle Mechanics; Painting & Decorating; Plumbing; Polymechanics; and Sheetmetal Work.
