| Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787 |
The past decade has been characterized by rapid globalization and technological innovation. As more people travel for business, tourism, and pleasure, there is an increased need airlines develop their networks, thus creating new business opportunities.
One aircraft that has been instrumental in the growth of the global air transport industry is the Boeing 787. Due to its size and amazing fuel efficiency, the 787 makes it possible to directly connect new small to medium city pairs with 7,850 nautical mile range.
Since introduction to service in 2011, the Boeing 787 was developed primarily to replace older aircraft, and more importantly open up new point to point routes, by-passing traditional hubs. Over 250 aircraft have been delivered to date with a further 1,100 of the type on order.
Marty Bentrott, vice president of sales, marketing and in-service support for the 787 said “Our strategy has been to design and build an airplane that will take passengers where they want to go, when they want to go, without intermediate stops; do it efficiently while providing the utmost comfort to passengers.”
Dublin Airport is benefit from Boeing’s 787 technological innovation as Ethiopian Airlines’ new route from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Dublin, and onto Los Angeles commences on 20th June operating three times weekly. Ireland granted Ethiopian what are termed fifth freedom rights, enabling the airline to sell tickets on all sectors of the new Addis Ababa to Los Angeles route.
Michael Yohannes, Irish Area Manager for Ethiopian’s Airlines said the airline was looking forward to launching its new routes from Dublin to LA and Dublin to Addis Ababa in June. “We’re already seeing strong demand for these services in the Irish market,” Mr Yohannes added.
In addition to scheduled service, Ethiopian Airlines commenced a three times weekly Boeing 787 technical stop in Dublin on Addis Abba to Toronto route on 10th May last.
Tour operator Falcon Holidays and Thomson, a member of TUI GROUP, will operate direct non-stop flights from Dublin to Cancun in Mexico, and to Montego Bay in Jamaica from June 2016 for a six week charter series, with a Thomson Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which includes Premium Club.
The addition of new Boeing 787 routes to Mexico and Jamaica means enhances Dublin Airport position as a long-haul hub serving 20 long-haul destinations in Summer 2016, with 17 destinations in the Americas and the Caribbean, two destinations in the Middle East and one destination in Africa.
In the years ahead Boeing’s 787 will become an increasingly feature at Dublin Airport connecting more destinations from Dublin on existing routes and new routes. American Airlines Boeing 767-300ER’s operated on Dublin to Chicago, will exit as new Boeing 787s get delivered .
In 2012 Etihad Airways announced Dublin will be one of seven Etihad Airways destinations served by the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner – along with Frankfurt, Istanbul, New Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing and Nagoya, when deliveries of the aircraft commenced in the last quarter of 2014.
The Irish Times reported in July 2014 Norwegian Air Shuttle was considering launching Dublin to Bangkok service using Boeing 787’s.
