Ryanair announced it will operate a total of 37 routes from Marseille Mp2 in Summer 2013 up 12% operating 268 weekly flights up 9% including five new routes to including five new routes to Chania (Crete), East Midlands, Warsaw, Essaouira and Rabat (Morocco) delivering 1.7 million passengers this year. In 2011 the airline carried 1.6 million passengers from Marseille up 37%.
Ryanair has carried 7.5 million passengers from Marseilles since launching its first route from Glasgow Prestwick in April 2006 and operated a Dublin route since April 2006 on a seasonal basis operating in peak summer months in 2011 and 2012.
Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said “Ryanair is delighted to announce its summer 2013 in Marseilles, with 5 new routes to / from Chania, East Midlands, Essaouira, Rabat and Warsaw will operate from April 2013, will accommodate 1.7 million passengers per year * to maintain 1,700 jobs at the site of the airport of Marseille, highlighting the commitment of Ryanair for tourism development in and around Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture”.
The French city of Marseille has recently been announced as a European Capital of Culture for 2013.
The cultural programme began in Marseille on 12th January and will continue throughout the rest of the year.
Marseille is France’s largest city on the Mediterranean coast and was chosen unanimously by the jury because its programme, as the chairman of the jury pointed out, presented “a particularly successful balance between cultural quality, political commitment and financial support”.
Marseille shares the honour of being chosen jointly with the Slovakian town of Kosice, which has also been chosen as a European Capital of Culture for 2013.
Marseille have an exciting and fun-filled programme lined up for their year in the spotlight including circuses, new galleries and venues, exhibitions, street entertainment, firework displays, open air concerts, street food, a new way marked long distance walk and lots more.
The Capital of Culture is Marseille Provence and includes an area stretching from Martigues to La Ciotat and including Arles, Aix, Aubagne and other communes in the area.
Upon arriving in Marseille city, the main place to go will be the Pavilion M, a building of wood and glass in the Place Bargemon (metro line 1 to Vieux Port then on foot towards the Hotel de Ville). The Pavilion will provide information on events, exhibitions, accommodation and transport.
